Naturally occurring products can also be used and are cheap or free, such as leaves or grass clippings. Many people use a commercial product because it will give them the look they want in their yard.

Mulch keeps water from evaporating, keeping soil damp longer, so things do not have to be watered so often. It also keeps soil temperature even, protecting it from the heat of summer and the cold of winter. It also inhibits weed growth when spread deep enough, as long as it is a commercial product that has been certified clear of any weed seeds.

These can decompose more rapidly the smaller they are, so some types may need to be replenished or replaced more often.

Gravel or pebbles can be used as mulch and are fairly inexpensive. Cheap gravel can be found at concrete quarries, where it is often less expensive than gravel or stone bought at a landscaping supplier. Rock and stone do reflect the sun and create a warmer landscape during the summertime.

Black landscaping fabric or plastic can be a good mulch, but only if used under another product. The plastic or fabric needs to be breathable and allow water access to the soil. If expose directly to the sun, it may break down rapidly, so should only be used under gravel, bark, or another product.

Mulch should ideally be used when plants are first installed. If the plants are already existing, early in the spring is the best time, to keep the weeds from growing. It is an attractive and affordable way to keep plants healthy and inhibit weeds.

There are also many different construction techniques used to make them.

They can be manufactured from numerous materials, according to the location they are constructed and the purpose of the fortification. There is not a truly correct method, or material for their design. Function always plays a bigger part than form into their design, where there are lots of different types to select from.

Gravity walls rely on their weight to make the soil motionless. They may be made out of heavy material like river stones or concrete. Looking for the right sod for your lawn might seem a little confusing at times. Some varieties do better in certain areas, while some need specific fertilizer and watering routines. Northern climates are perfect for Kentucky Bluegrass. This variety is soft, lush, and famous for its dark green color. It tolerates some shade and does great in full sun. It is best to use four to six pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet in the early fall and then less during the spring.

Another variety that does well in northern climates is Tall Fescue. This variety does great in any type of soil and is light to medium green in color. Water and fertilize moderately. It takes only three pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet during the non-summer months.

Bermuda grass grows well in hot southern climates. It does not do well in shade and is high maintenance. This variety is used on golf courses and athletic playing fields. If used in an area with average rain fall it needs little water. However, if it is mowed frequently or has a lot of wear and tear, it will require more frequent watering and fertilizer as opposed to if it is used in a regular yard. The disadvantage to Bermuda is that during the winter it will appear dead but it is not. The roots are still healthy and the grass will turn green as soon as the weather warms up.

Zoysia and St. Augustine grass both do well in southern climates. Both love lots of sunshine. Zoysia also does well in shade and needs little water. However it will need aeration because it does thatch. Fertilize it with 2-5 pounds of nitrogen per year.

St. Augustine grass will take some shade and its water needs are dependent on the local rain fall. Fertilize with 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet per month to be kept evenly green. Otherwise it will have irregular color and growth. More fertilizer will get lush growth but it will also get pest and diseases.

Centipede sod is low maintenance and great in hot climates that are either dry or moist. It is light green in color and grows slowly but does resist weeds. Low mowing or over fertilizing will cause it to die. When the sod is first put down, do keep it moist but not soaked. Then once it is established it only need moderate to low watering. When fertilizing, do not use phosphorus and low to medium nitrogen and potassium. A good fertilizer mix is 15-0-15.

Structures that are built to hold back moving earth are called Retaining walls. These units are usually used to stabilize areas of land, typically where there are slopes or varying elevations. A common example is, terraces for railways, roads, agriculture, and buildings.

The walls are designed to resist any lateral pressure from soil when there is a change in the elevation of the ground that exceeds the angle or repose of soil. Every wall is built to support a specific wedge of soil. A basement wall is one example of a retaining wall. Typically, this term is used in reference to a cantilever wall that is freestanding and has no lateral support from the top.

Gravity, anchored, piling, and cantilever are the four main models of these constructions. Gravity models are the traditional model for these structures. They hold the earth using their weight. Because the internal leverage pressure coming from the earth is so high, they may topple easily. Long piles are incorporated into piling models. These devices have a fixed wall with soil on both sides. The soil is positioned at the lower end of the wall. If the piles can hold together, despite bending forces, the wall will remain stable.

Cantilever models utilize the pressure created by the earth in order to support itself using a lever arm. Anchored models are attached to cables. The cables, which are driven into soil or rock and help in position by expanding anchors, keep the structures from falling over.

There are many techniques used for retaining. Soil nailing can reinforce excavations, soil slopes, and retaining walls. This method requires the insertion of slender parts, typically steel-enforced bars, into pre-drilled areas. The bars are installed untensioned and positioned in a downward incline. The hole in which they are placed is grouted or drilled into a fixed position. Isolated soil nail heads or a facing may be used at the surface.

Retaining systems sometimes require more than just a wall. Soil-strengthened techniques are able to reduce earth pressure on the wall. Generally this is used with some type of wall as well. Mechanically stabilized earth, MSE, is soil that is built with artificial reinforce. Layered mats, called geosynthetics, are attached to the ends. These mats offer additional resistance internally. Steel traps, which also have layers, do this as well. For this to be accomplished, there must be outer facing walls that the many layers can be attached to. Most of the wall faces are concrete so that they can withstand movement.

In areas where it is necessary that the earth be held back, retaining walls are constructed. These structure are designed to resist any pressure placed by soil or earth.
