Many people use a commercial product because it will give them the look they want in their yard.

It also keeps soil temperature even, protecting it from the heat of summer and the cold of winter. It also inhibits weed growth when spread deep enough, as long as it is a commercial product that has been certified clear of any weed seeds.

Mulch can also improve the quality of the soil, if it is an organic product. As the product decays it turns into topsoil, which makes the soil beneath more nutrient-rich. In areas where soil easily becomes compacted or has a lot of clay, it can keep soil loose, allowing for better root health.

Mulch can keep the surface of the soil from crusting over, which allows for better water absorption. It can also add beauty and interest to a landscape, depending upon the product. They come in different types and colors, improving aesthetics while keeping plants healthier.

There are two basic types: inorganic and organic. Inorganic products include rocks, gravel, and landscaping fabric. They do not decompose but may need to be replaced or replenished every few years if by a roadway or sidewalk.

Pine bark and wood chips are commonly used and are available commercially. They are often colored, usually black or red. They come in different sizes, depending upon the look desired and what they are being used for. Larger pieces can float away in a strong rainstorm. These can decompose more rapidly the smaller they are, so some types may need to be replenished or replaced more often.

Gravel or pebbles can be used as mulch and are fairly inexpensive. Cheap gravel can be found at concrete quarries, where it is often less expensive than gravel or stone bought at a landscaping supplier. Rock and stone do reflect the sun and create a warmer landscape during the summertime.

Black landscaping fabric or plastic can be a good mulch, but only if used under another product. The plastic or fabric needs to be breathable and allow water access to the soil. If expose directly to the sun, it may break down rapidly, so should only be used under gravel, bark, or another product.

Mulch should ideally be used when plants are first installed. If the plants are already existing, early in the spring is the best time, to keep the weeds from growing. It is an attractive and affordable way to keep plants healthy and inhibit weeds.
